Blouberg Ridge Primary School
This is definitely the highlight of the Grade 3 year. The Grade 3’s go to Rocklands in Simonstown during the second term. Rocklands is a wonderful location for the children and they spend lots of free time exploring. During the structured time we do team building exercises and concentrate on values like sharing, sportsmanship and independence. The campsite has an excellent Activities Team and they help us with our activities. The children learn how to take care of nature both on the mountain and the beach. The tired little bodies collapse into bed each night after a full day of adventure.
The Grade Fours visit the picturesque Simonsberg Conference Centre outside Stellenbosch early in the second term of each year. The pupils take part in a variety of team building and adventure activities which include canoeing, obstacle courses, sliding down a “foofie” slide and a “blindfold” walk during the two night stay. The facilitators at the Centre lead the activities and challenge and support each pupils to make this an unforgettable experience.
The annual Grade Five camp takes place at the SOS Camp near Villiersdorp. The campsite is situated at the foot of the mountains not far from the Waterskloof Dam.Pupils experience well-planned lessons and “hands on experience” at the School in the Wilds Campsite.
The three day, two night camp has the children’s attention captivated from the time of arrival to departure. Experienced faciitators present educational programmes that are both environmentally sound as well as teaching the skils and knowledge of outdoor life.
The camp activities include a ‘bundu-bash’- an activity which reinforces both gross and fine motor co-ordination and introduces the concept of both teamwork and leadership; working in and being part of group synergy, survival skills and sportsmanship. The variety of activities is well balanced to cater for children of various physical and intellectual abilities.
Other activities include mountain and rock climbing, abseiling, preparing and cooking food and building a shelter using the natural resources. The children learn to be independent, responsible and to work as a team. This includes cleaning up all waste and litter and being Eco-friendly. This camp promises much fun and excitement and brings out the best in each child. This camp for many children is definitely a highlight of their school career.
The Grade 6 pupils have the wonderful opportunity each year of attending three day camp at Camp Karmel in Franschhoek. Transport to the camp site is by bus. Once at camp, they are placed into groups and groups leaders are appointed. In the days that follow, pupils do team building exercises, explore the vegetation, learn how to make amazing food, develop their social skills, and all the activities take place in the beautiful mountains at Camp Karmel. One of the highlights is swimming in the naturally formed pools within a river system. At the end of the camp, they return invigorated and exhausted, but with a sense of accomplishment. This is definitely a camp to remember!
Grade 7 pupils attend R.O.C.K.E.T. CAMP. It is an acronym for Relaying of Crucial Knowledge to Emerging Teens.
This camp deals with the topics on sexuality which come directly from the Natural Science and Life Orientation curriculum.
The camp is held at Rocklands Centre, Simonstown . The camp is done away from school so that the boys and girls are separated for the talks to avoid any embarrassment or awkward questions.
The WCED have seen a slide show on the entire camp and are extremely happy that our school is covering the subject of Sexuality
